Marriage Registration Process in Chennai

When couples spend a lot of time planning a perfect marriage they seem to forget an important thing which is intended for their protection only. They forget the marriage certificate- an essential document which establishes the marital status of a couple irrespective of any religion. There is no time limit of registering the marriage one can always go for it. In Chennai the process of acquiring marriage certificate is even simpler.

One does not need a consultant or an agent for getting a certificate of marriage, only needed is complete and accurate documents.

Here is the documentation list and procedure which you can follow to register your marriage in Chennai-

Eligibility-


· The age of 18 years must be completed by the Bride for the marriage.

· An age of 21 years must be completed by the Bridegroom at the time of marriage.


There are 2 acts which decides the course of action for solemnizing the marriages in Chennai

· Hindu Marriage Act 1967

· Special Marriage Act 1954 (Mainly for inter- cast marriages)

Documents required for registration of Hindu Marriage

· Residence Proof (Voter ID, Ration Card, Driving License, Aadhar Card).

· Proof of birth date of both Husband and Wife (Birth Certificate, 10th Class certificate).

· Application form to be filled and duly signed by both wife and husband. Download application form

· 4 Passport Size photos of both bridegroom and bride

· If the marriage is soleminized in a religious place a declaration certificate from the priest is required

· Two affidavits, one from wife and one from husband in the standard format

· Marriage Proof ( Wedding card, Temple Marriage Receipt or any other proof of marriage solemnization)

· Copy of divorce/ death certificate in case of divorcee or widow/widower

(All the documents should be attested by Gazetted Officer)

Step 1: You need to visit the local sub registrar’s office and submit the above mentioned documents. If your documents are correct and completed the officer will submit your documents and provide you an application number after taking an application registration fees from you.

Step 2: Afterwards you can check in the registrar office or they will call you for a date when you can go and receive your certificate by signing the documents

Don’t forget to take a witness along with you as he/she is also required to sign the certificate in the presence of Registrar

In the case of Hindu Marriage Act the processing time is 30-90 days

In case of Special Marriage Act

1. Marriage need to be solemnized in front of registering officer or any other form.

2. Residence of bride or bridegroom must fall within the jurisdiction of the Registering officer.

3. Notice for intended marriages.

4. All the documents marked above should be complete and accurate.

5. If there is no objection is received within the 30 days of notice submission, registration will be considered.
