Marriage Registration in Mumbai

In the Indian society people are less bothered for marriage registration and spend their happy married life without even possessing a certificate of proof. Now, the government has made the marriage registration mandatory especially for those who want to apply for name change, passport, visa or any other legal certification. 

Here is some essential information that may be helpful to you while applying for marriage registration in Mumbai.
There are 2 acts which decides the course of action for solemnizing the marriages in Mumbai-         
  •  Section 16 of Special Marriage Act 1954
  • Special Marriage Act 1954 (Mainly for inter- cast marriages)
Marriages which are solemnized under Section 16 of Special Marriage Act, 1954 the following documents need to be filled along with prescribed form.

You just need to collect the form from the Sub Registrar’s office and submit the following documents while fulfilling the below mentioned criteria. The process of marriage registration is very simple if your documents are complete and accurate.
  • Applicant need to fill the prescribed form signed duly by both husband and the wife
  • Age proof of bridegroom and bride like passport, SSC board certificate, birth certificate or domicile certificate
  •  Residential proof of bridegroom and bride like passport, ration card, voter Id card utility bill i.e. electricity bill or telephone bill   
  • 3 photographs of bride and bridegroom
  • No matter marriage has been solemnized anywhere in India, it is mandatory both husband and wife staying together under  Marriage officer Jurisdiction
  • Wedding Invitation card
  •  Address and ID proof of the witnesses are also needs to be attached (at least 2 witnesses)
  •  Court stamp fees of Rs 100

P.S. Along these above mentioned documents one Xerox copy of each is also required duly attested by gazette officer
When you submit the mentioned documents you will be given a date to collect the certificate or informed on phone later. Do not forget to take one witness and the receipt along with you to sign the certificate on the provided date. It will take minimum 30 days to process the marriage application in Mumbai under Section 16 of Special Marriage Act 1954. 


Marriages which are solemnized under special marriage Act, 1954
The age of bridegroom should be 21 years and bride should be of 18 years of age.

The form need to be submitted along with the below mentioned documents at the registrar’s office. 

  •  Age proof of bridegroom and bride like passport, SSC board certificate, birth certificate or domicile certificate
  •  Residential proof of bridegroom and bride like passport, ration card, voter Id card utility bill i.e. electricity bill or telephone bill   
  •  3 photographs of bride and bridegroom
  • In case of divorcee certificate of divorce needs to be produced and attached
  • Address and ID proof of the witnesses are also needs to be attached (at least 2 witnesses)
  • Municipal death certificate is required to produce in case of widower or widow
  • Court stamp fees of Rs 100
