Marriage Registration in Delhi


  1.     Marriage Registration :
Both husband and wife are issued a marriage registration certificate once their marriage is solemnized. Under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 where both the wife and husband are Buddhists, Hindus, Sikhs or Jain are subject to obtain a marriage registration certificate. By chance either wife or husband is not Buddhist, Hindu, Sikh or Jain then marriage is registered under the Special Marriage Act, 1954.

     2.       Application Fee for Registration:
An application fees of Rs 100/- is charged for registration.
For solemnization a fees of Rs. 150/- is charged.

     3.       Documents required for registration:
    All the documents except the fees receipt should be attested by Gazetted Officer
  •  Residence Proof (Voter ID, Ration Card, Aadhar Card).
  •  Proof of birth date of both Husband and Wife (Birth Certificate, 10th Class certificate).
  •  Application form to be filled and duly signed by both wife and husband.

  •  Two Passport size photographs of both husband and wife.
  •   On a plane white paper, one marriage photograph of both husband and wife which also need to be attested.
  •   In case if marriage is solemnized in a temple or any other religious space, priest who solemnized the marriage is obligatory to issue a declaration certificate of marriage.
  • One witness not from the immediate family of both husband and wife.

  •   Copy of divorce/ death certificate in case of divorcee or widow/widower
  •    If available invitation card of marriage is also advisable.
     4.       Where to Apply:  
 You can go to Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) office in the wife or husband residence of jurisdiction either, during the working hours from Monday to Friday (9.30 a.m. to 1.00 p.m).  To know the SDM office address in the jurisdiction of your residence Click Here

     5.       Procedure:
     Hindu Marriage Act: On the day of submission of application itself document verification is done. After that a date is given or intimated to the couple for marriage registration. On the communicated day couple along with the witness need to be there in the SDM office. On the same day itself marriage registration certificate is issued.

    6.     Process Time:   
   After submitting the application in SDM office it normally takes 10-15 days for issuing the certificate. In case of special marriage act the one can get the response within 60 days.
